The Input Layers

Network operations in the first layers of the stereo vision network are simulated with simple rate-coding neurons, i.e., only the average firing frequency \( s_{i} \) of a neuron is used for coding signals. The operation of a generic rate-coding neuron with index \( i \) can be described by the equation

s_{i}=f\left( \sum _{j}w_{ij}s_{j}\right) \, ,
\end{displaymath} (3)

where \( w_{ij} \) is the synaptic link from cell \( j \) to cell \( i \) and \( f(\ldots ) \) the transfer function of the neuron.
